The same furniture can make a room feel calm or cramped depending on how it is placed. A few simple rules do most of the work.
Place the bed first
The bed is the anchor. Set the headboard against a solid wall with a clear view of the door but not directly in line with it — it simply feels more settled. Leave walking space on at least one side.
Keep clear walkways
- Aim for roughly 60–70 cm of clearance along the routes you use daily.
- Do not block drawer fronts — you should be able to open them fully.
- Keep the path from bed to door clear for night-time trips.
Balance the room
- Match nightstand height roughly to the mattress top.
- Put the tallest storage against the longest wall so the room does not feel lopsided.
- Leave one surface deliberately empty — visual calm helps the room feel restful.
Light it in layers
One ceiling light rarely does the job. A bedside lamp or a nightstand with built-in LED for night use, plus a floor lamp for a reading corner, lets you drop the light level as bedtime approaches.
Arrange around how you actually use the room and it will feel bigger than it measures. See our range to fill the gaps.
